    ATHENS AND ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY These collected papers construct a distinctive view of Classical Athens and of Athenian democracy, a view which takes seriously the evidence of settlement archaeology and of art history. This evidence both casts new light on traditional questions and enables new ques-. The Tarquinia pelike represents a new addition to the previously considered corpus of Athenian vases with female musicians (Bundrick , Bundrick 92–), as well as the corpus of vases showing women with book rolls (cf. Immerwahr and Glazebrook ).

    This book explores the importance of Thrace to these individuals and its resulting significance in the political, cultural and social history of Athens. Thrace was vitally important for Athens thanks to its natural resources and access to strategic waterways, which were essential to a maritime empire, and connections to the area conferred.
